Furries are fans of anthropomorphic animals - that is to say, animals with human characteristics. If you enjoy any form of media featuring animals that talk, walk on two legs, wear clothes, or act like humans in some way, and you want to join the furry fandom, then congratulations! You're a furry!
A fursona is how furries choose to represent ourselves within the fandom, kind of like an avatar. It's an anthropomorphic animal which we design to represent ourselves, either in full or in part, and can be either a realistic or idealised version of ourselves. Some people even have multiple fursonas to represent different facets of their personality, or to experiment with aspects of their identity such as gender, sexuality and style.
A fursuit is a fursona brought to life! These living works of art are as close as we can get to actually being our fursona in the real world. Made mostly from foam and faux fur, fursuits are costumes which allow us to masquerade as our fursonas, and are the most well-known and highly visible aspect of the furry fandom. They can range from a simple pair of gloves or ears on a headband, to complex full-body suits featuring hi-tech electronics. They can be delicate, and can easily cost thousands of dollars to buy or repair, so please always ask a fursuiter before you touch them, and never forget that there's a real person inside that fur!
Absolutely not! The only prerequisites to joining the furry fandom are a love of anthropomorphic animals, and a desire to join the fandom!
It's easy! Just follow our Facebook or Instagram pages, join our Facebook group, or jump right in and start chatting in our Discord or Telegram groups!
No! Tazfurs is completely free to join! Tazfurs will never ask you for money, or for your credit card or bank details. If someone claiming to be Tazfurs or from Tazfurs asks for these, please immediately report it to any member of Tazfurs staff. If you think you have been scammed, please contact your bank and the relevant authorities as soon as possible.
Sometimes! Events may be hosted in public places with an entry fee such as minigolf, bowling, or movies. Any such fees will be paid directly to the hosting venue, NOT to Tazfurs. Occasionally we may ask for a gold coin donation to help cover the cost of a sausage and/or drink at a park meet. Please check the specific event you're interested in for more details. If you have any questions about specific event costs, please ask the event organiser first, then escalate to Tazfurs staff if necessary. Remember that Tazfurs will NEVER ask for your bank or credit card details, and anyone asking for these should be immediately reported to Tazfurs staff.
Usually no, sorry. Exceptions may be made for people with significant and ongoing connections to Tasmania and for furry-adjacent community members such as Therians and Otherkin. Furries visiting from interstate/internationally are welcome to join on a temporary basis for the duration of their stay in Tasmania. Please ask a staff member if you're not sure whether or not you qualify to join.
Absolutely! Service animals are welcome at all Tazfurs events, unless the event organiser believes there is reasonable risk to the health and safety of the service animal or other animals or people at the event as outlined in the Discrimination Disability Act (1992) Section s54A Subsection 4b (Amendment Act 2008). Should this exemption apply it will be clearly stated in the event description.
Sometimes! This is subject to the discretion of the hosting venue and the event organiser. Please check the event details and ask the event organiser for more information on specific events.
Absolutely, within reason! Just let any staff member know what you have planned, and as long as it's sensible, safe and fun, we'll help you advertise it throughout Tazfurs spaces. We do recommend attending a few Tazfurs events before hosting your own though, as people are far more likely to come to your event once they know who you are!
Usually, yes! This is subject to the discretion of the host, the venue, and the nature of the specific event. Check with the event host for more details. Please note that any children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
In accordance with Tasmanian State and Australian Federal laws, you must be at least 16 years of age to join Tazfurs.
Absolutely, provided that they are respectful and supportive and follow our rules!
Yes! We love being recorded, especially if you share the footage afterwards! All we ask is that you be respectful. Always ask permission from your subject before photographing/videoing them. Please also try to avoid taking photographs/videos of fursuiters with their heads or other body parts off. Please note that some venues/hosts may apply additional restrictions so do ask ahead of time if you're not sure.
For safety reasons, drones are not permitted at Tazfurs events without written permission from both the event host and the venue.
